"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text arrives. "My request was to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Several famous supporters have publicly begged for the role.

It's clear something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals often show them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless joy you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate young girls to make music."

"And thus anyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group are speaking from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor resonates with the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," adds Alana. "However we're just thankful for the pioneers that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project came out of a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The themes detail departures and partings. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound confidence called for a new sound – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's openness fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global following.

But the band will always be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "There is nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
