European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
