Administration Announces Federal Worker Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Third Week
The White House disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.
While the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.
Union Response and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.
This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.
The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.
During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a largely partisan basis.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official ordered the administration to disclose details on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been recalled to execute staff reductions.
An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to conduct terminations, citing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the funding expired.
Consequences for Employees
The layoffs occurred on the same day that federal workers got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but not the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.
Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
This is unjust to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
